TWC Malaysia completes the lifting of Trusses for construction of TRX North-South Bridge

TWC Malaysia recently completed the lifting of four Trusses for the construction of the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) North-South bridge for the upcoming financial district in Kuala Lumpur (KL).

TRX is a 70-acre development by 1Malaysia Development Berhad in the heart of Kuala Lumpur and will be KL's new Central Business District and Malaysia's International Financial District.

Our Demag CC 8800-1 crawler crane was deployed to lift the four trusses in SSL Configuration using a main boom length of 72 metres. Each truss was 66 metres in length and 26.5 metres in width and weighed 220T. A combined load moment of 1000T was safely achieved by the CC 8800-1 throughout the entire operation.

All four evening installations could only occur after 11pm on weekends. Due to the safety of the lifting project, roads around the project site had to be closed. One of the most challenging aspects of the project was the limited area that was available for the team to assemble and disassemble the Demag CC 8800-1 crawler crane. However, this was made possible with the combined expertise and experience of our team.

Below are images showing the limited space available for the Crawler Crane assembly:

Due to the large truss dimensions, our team experienced several blind spots between the crawler crane and the truss. It was one of the most challenging lifts that our Malaysian team had encountered. The clear communication between the crane operator and the lifting crew overcame this.

The project was initially planned to be completed in April 2020. However, it was disrupted by the Movement Control Order (MCO) imposed by the Malaysian Government to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus. When work could resume, our team had to undergo the mandatory swab test for any presence of the COVID-19 virus and test negative before they could resume the lifting operations.

With the completion of the TRX North-South Bridge, the 57-acre North parcel will be connected to the 13-acre South parcel of the financial district. The 66 metres single span bridge will also include a cantilevered structure to accommodate a pedestrian walkway and a utility corridor located within the truss to host power and other utility connections.

A job well done to our team in Malaysia!
